A proper crown is cast, at least two inches thick at its thinnest, reinforced, sloped away from the flue, with a bond break at the tile and a projection past the brick with a drip edge underneath.
When a coating suffices
Hairline cracks in a crown that is otherwise correctly shaped can be bridged with a flexible crown coating. It accommodates movement in a way rigid mortar cannot, it is inexpensive, and it buys years.
When it must be recast
Cracks wide enough for a coin, missing sections, a wash with no overhang at all, or break-up around the tile. Coating over that seals water in.
